Minority-related Public Art and Monuments Will Have Bilingual Inscriptions

Henceforth, all commemorative plaques, public art, and installations or monuments connected to the Hungarian community in Romania must have an inscription in Hungarian as well as Romanian. Initiated by the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ), on 14 November 2022, President Iohannis announced the amendment to the law which also applies to other national minorities.

Henceforth, all public inscriptions referencing historical events, persons, or even buildings no longer standing will be bilingual in the affected national minority’s language.

The requirement will apply not just in those settlements where 20 percent or more of the population belongs to the affected minority, but nationwide.
