On January 11, Bogdan Aurescu spoke with his Ukrainian counterpart, Dmitro Kuleba, by telephone, to discuss the Ukrainian minority law adopted in December. There is a sizeable Romanian speaking minority in Ukraine.
On Wednesday, Aurescu and Kuleba agreed that a „comprehensive” consultation process will begin between Bucharest and Kyiv on the issue.
The Romanian Foreign Ministry statement reported that in addition to the discussions between the top diplomats, Klaus Iohannis and Volodymyr Zelenskyi are also planning a personal meeting in the near future. The parties agreed to remain in constant, direct contact in order to coordinate the meeting.
Aurescu had presented the objections to the law in detail before, on December 20, 2022, and underpinned them with arguments in a letter he had sent to Kuleba. During Wednesday’s meeting, Bogdan Aurescu re-visited the sections of the law of concern to Romanian officials and representatives of the Romanian community in Ukraine.
Bogdan Aurescu also went on to remind Kuleba of the intense discussions he had last year with Ukraine- including direct conversations with Dmitro Kuleba himself – about this issue. He called on Kyiv to take concrete steps to ease Romanian concerns, including not recognizing the ‘Moldovan’ language.
