Kelemen Hunor Advocates for Presidential Elections at Year’s End Kelemen Hunor, the leader of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ), has expressed his support for holding the first round of presidential elections on November 30, followed by a runoff on December 8. He made these remarks in an interview with RFI following an announcement by Marcel Ciolacu, Prime Minister and leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), that consultations would be held with parliamentary party leaders on the timing of the presidential elections.

Kelemen criticized the government for not adhering to previously announced dates, stating, „How can you trust those who announce a schedule and then do not keep their word? This is not the first time.” He referred to a decision by the National Liberal Party (PNL) national political committee, which suggested dates between September 15 and September 29. Kelemen indicated skepticism about holding elections in September, suggesting that elections would likely occur in November due to lost opportunities for a September vote.

In contrast, Marcel Ciolacu emphasized during a government meeting that political tensions had not influenced governance, stressing the government’s responsibility for Romania’s stability. He highlighted the need to end disputes surrounding the election dates to maintain trust among coalition partners.

Ciolacu, as Prime Minister, underscored the importance of impartial decision-making, aiming to consult with parliamentary leaders on Monday regarding the election timeline. He emphasized a commitment to stability and rejected provocations that could lead to government crises.
