On August 4, 2024, ten political groups signed an agreement to establish the National Alliance for Greater Romania.
The justification given behind the initiative is that the current parliamentary parties have “completely strayed from the national interests represented by Vatra Românească since it was established in February 1990.” The far-right nationalist movement was formed explicitly with an anti-ethnic Hungarian minority agenda and was the main instigator of the March 1990 violence against the community in Targu Mures/Márosvásárhely.
They believe that in the current “desperately difficult situation,” the Vatra Românească program is the only solution for Romanian society, and they intend to carry forward the ideals of this organization, reported Agerpres News Agency.
Dorel Onaca, former Romania Mare Party senator and president of the National Alliance for Greater Romania, stated that they plan to field candidates in this year’s parliamentary and presidential elections, who will be presented at the Alliance’s organizational meeting on August 25. He added that either he or Gheorghe Funar might run for the presidency.
